Shame Julia, shame.

Down here in Oz we have just made history. We have a woman Prime Minister.

She was installed last week following internal Labor Party wrangling and political intrigue. Given the coup, I had mixed feelings on day one, followed by increasing optimism on days two, three and four. Today is day seven and for me the honeymoon is official over and I’m not sure if I’ll even stay faithful.

Julia Gillard announced today that she will not support legalising same sex marriages in Australia.

So the bar just got higher. I’m no longer happy with a woman as PM. I won’t be happy until we have a gay, married PM. Male or female, it doesn’t really matter. We need a leader who is willing to stand against discrimination and for a just, fair, respectful and equal society.

Maybe for Bob Brown…It’s Time!

  1. Amen to all that! I was a bit sad to see Kevin go in the coup, given that he's an actual live nerd Anglican churchgoer, that rarest of political species, while Julia is a card-carrying atheist. So Julia ought not to care what any of the Christians think, let alone the nasty right-wing ones who probably bundle our living-with-her-unmarried-male-partner right in the same sinful basket with all those lesbian and gay people. Yet here she is, ducking the hail of anathemas from the right, and failing to notice that there are quite a few leftie Christians (especially Anglicans?!) who would be very happy to celebrate with Bob Brown and his partner. And maybe retired high court judge Michael Kirby and his partner of 40 years, profiled on the ABC's religious affairs TV programme last week. It is possible to get mugs, shopping bags and other paraphernalia printed with such phrases as "Proud Member of the Christian Left." Watch out, Julia, because not all Christians who want to put "family first" have the same idea of what counts as "family"!
